3 Four Square Tips for Biz

Here are some easy ways you can use Four Square for your business,  think about customizing your Four Square strategy in alignment with your niche.  This can really be a great way to increase buzz about your business.

1.  Register Your Business - You need to claim your venue to ensure all the information is accurate.  Unfortunately at this point I do not have a brick & mortar store so I can't really register, but this is just great.

2.  Create a Special - Use this to create some discount for Four Square users who check into your location.  ex: New Era offers 25% off to any Mayor of a flagship store.  If you don't know what the Mayor means then you really need to research Four Square a little more.

3.  Dashboard - Customized statistics of your business' influence through Four Square.  Convenient all in one place.

Four Square makes it so easy for small businesses to get themselves out there while delivering accurate information to the customer!  I will def be using this in the near future.

Green Your Business

Here are some cheap and easy ways you can
Green your small business (or home) in no time!

1.  Power - Save power by turning your computer down at night.  Also unplug electronics from outlets.  They drain electricity even when they aren't in use.  Switch to energy efficient light bulbs.  It costs a little more money up front
but you save a lot in the long run.

2.  Paper - Don't waste paper, it's not necessary in the digital age.
If you do use it then use both sides and recycle it afterwards.

3.  Waste - Cut down on waste by up-cycling something after use.  An example that I do is all the paper that I shred I then use it with litter for my cats.  There are many different things you can do so see what works for you.

4.  Recycle - In Western New York esspecially you should be recycling, they make it so easy.  Recycle newspapers, paper, glass, plastic and anything you can.
The smallest part makes a difference.

5.  DIY - Do it yourself where you can.  For example, for Christmas presents this year I made bows out of old magazines.  Yes it probably didn't save me too much money but it's lots of love that goes into making them.  :-)

Pop Up Stores: What?

What are Pop Up Stores & What are They're Importance?  I'll fill you in:

1.  What - These are stores that actually "pop up" in a location.  Many businesses are now doing this but the most familiar example is Halloween Costume stores in October.

2.  Where - That's the beauty of it they can be anywhere.  Again think of that Halloween Store, it probably wasn't in the same location.  They usually will rent out a vacant building for a couple months prior to the holiday.

Reebok Pop Up Store
3.  When - Again that's the beauty of it, you don't know until it's happening.  These are usually very exclusive and in high traffic places.

4.  How - Usually they promote these things exclusively to followers or fans.  For example we have a sandwich truck that comes around the city.  Everyday it is somewhere different, to find out where you must follow him on Twitter.

5.  Why - These pop up stores are great for both customers and businesses.  It is a quick and cheap to create a store and it is cool and interesting for customers.

These are a great way to integrate your social media fan base and convert them into sales.  Maybe these could work for your business & let me know because I will be there!

How to Analyze Tracking

Here are some easy ways to analyze your social  media tracking.

1.  Number of Views - How many people are visiting your blog (site) a day, in a week, in a month.  Is the number steady, rising, or declining?

2.  How they are Visiting - Are they finding your site on google or yahoo?  Are they using Chrome or Mozilla to view it?

3.  Number of Fans - This is different than the number of views because people may still be coming to view your site they just might not have clicked 'like'.

4.  Engaging Content - Are people commenting or liking on the content you are posting?  If they aren't engaging then it isn't working.  Change it up.

5.  Time of Day - When are most of your fans engaging in your content?  Mornings, evenings, work hours, Saturdays, etc.

6.  Development - Now you must plan around these facts you just analyzed.

For Example:  I learned that most people view my blog on the weekends and they are finding my blog by linked in and google.

So now I would post promotional blurbs on the weekends to promote my site and make sure I am always posting updates from my blog on Linked In.

These small things can make a huge difference.

Find Your Keywords

Why are Keywords so Important?  Basically it's all about 1 thing: SEO.  Search Engine Optimization.  You want all search engines to find your website, blog, social media site, etc.  So here's how you identify your keywords:

1.  What is your business?  Think of each keyword in your name and motto.
2.  What are you Selling?  Think of each item tangible or intangible.
3.  Where is your Location?  Start small then think bigger.
4.  Who is your Target?  What are the demographics of these people?
5.  Thesaurus - Use this to think of different ways to say the same thing.
6.  Misspellings - Misspell things so that it can be found either way.  Make sure you do not misspell things in your actual site, make these things non-visible so it doesn't ruin your credibility.
Example:  (Keywords)
1.  I own a bar.  (bar, tavern, club, brewery...)
2.  I am selling alcohol.  (beer, liquor, shots, pints, drafts, bottles...)
3.  I am located in Buffalo by a College.
(Buffalo, New York, College, State, University...)
4.  My target is College kids.  (Students, ID, 21)

Stumble Upon is Great

Here are my favorite things about Stumble Upon:

1.  The Site Itself - One website with tons of other websites.  All you do is press 'stumble' and it goes through a database of cool websites or things that people have stumbled upon.  I thought this was like a household name, but I do know people who haven't used it yet.  You must start ASAP.

2.  Interests - Set up your interests so that you stumble on things you already like (ex: Photography, Science, Conspiracies, Beer, Art, Government, Entertainment, etc.)

3.  Favorites - When you see a site you like you can favorite it for future use and so that your followers can see what you like.

4.  Following - You can follow your friends and they can follow you.  Then you can share your favorite sites and see what other people enjoy.

5.  Add Your Own - You can add your own favorite websites to this list.  It has to be something really good in order to add it.

Fan Page Tips

Here are some tips to make a "sticky" Fan Page.  Sticky means that people will view it and want to go back to it for more information.

1.  Visual - Everything about online is visual.  Make sure your page pops with good pictures and colors.  If you can custom design your own page then even better.  If not then work with what you have.

2.  Pictures - Make sure your pictures that fans first see are relevant then they will want to look at more

3.  About Section - Get to the point!  This is what shows up first when a fan goes to your wall, get to the point before they have to click onto another page.  People want information quick.

4.  Content - Have content that is enjoyable and relates to your cause.

5.  Integrate - Link to your other social media sites like Twitter & Tumblr.

6.  Track - Insights does this for you, track individual posts or old stats.  If you are not doing this then the plan is useless.

You should always track your progress to see what works and what doesn't.  This can lead to the most effective social media plan.

Check out my Fan Page - Tell me what I should do to make my page "stickier".

Viral Crazes You Should Know

So it's coming to the end of the year - Let's see where you are with Social Media.  Here are some things you SHOULD KNOW.  If you haven't heard about these things then you have a lot of work to do in 2012 to stay ahead of the trends and to be aware of what is actually going on in virtual land.  These were some hot internet crazes.

 1.  Planking - If you haven't tried it that's okay, but you better know what this is.  (Picture)

2.  Rick Rolled - What happens when you are "burned".  From Rick Aisly, seriously though I shouldn't have to explain it.

3.  Cone-ing - Ordering ice cream and grabbing it by the ice cream instead of the cone.

4.  Occupy Police Officer - He is all over the web and photoshop-ed into every famous picture/event.  Hilarious.  (Picture)

5.  Kittens on Kittens on Kittens - You Tube it, so cute and tons of different spin off videos

6.  Demotivational Posters - You must have seen these, there are tons of them.  (Picture)

7.  Mash Ups - Every good song has it's mashup.  It really is a great way to enjoy new and old music.  The most popular this year was Party Rock Anthem was the most popular song mashed up this year.

8.  Gifs - Animated pictures.  These have been around since the beginning of the internet.  I remember using these on The Palace.

9.  Ghost Riding - This was a huge internet craze for some reason, it's so dangerous.  Please don't do it.

10.  Meme - Taking a funny picture and morphing it into so much more.

Social Media Marketing Mix

Alright it's back to the basics.  When focusing on Social Media it is very important to stay on track with the Marketing Mix (the 4 P's).  Product, Price, Place and Promotion.  In easier terms:

Who - Who will do each task to implement your social media plan (ex: you, intern...)

What - What will you need for your social media plan (ex: internet, fan page...)

Where - Where will you do your advertising & promotions (ex: twitter, facebook...)

When - When will this happen (ex: daily, monthly...)

Why - Why are you doing this?  Set a clear goal for yourself.

How - How is this all getting accomplished?

Follow these questions and you will be on your way in no time.  The more questions you ask yourself the better your plan will be.

Twitter Trend Tips

What I've learned by studying Twitter Trending:

1.  Sunday is all about Football.  Whatever player is hot, top plays and overall buzz about football in America.  This is usually worldwide too.

2.  It's important to look at trends in all different locations.  When Adele announced she was having throat surgery it was trending in almost every single country.  What is trendy somewhere might not be in another place.

3.  Justin Beiber is always talked about on Twitter.  Leading me to assume that a lot of young girls use Twitter or there are a lot of people who should be on some sort of watch list.

4.  Spanish is used everywhere even in United States trends.

5.  TV Shows are always trending while the show is airing and if it's good usually the next day.

These are all great things you should get into tweeting about.
So maybe Justin Beiber has nothing to do with you,
but an acoustic video of him is more your style.

I Heart Vista Prints

So it's not necessarily the greatest option out there but Vista Prints is GREAT for Small Businesses (always support local business if it's possible)!  Here's Why:

1.  Free Stuff - They are usually always offering 250 free business cards.  Sign up for their mailing list if you don't see it on their site.  You get "free stuff" emails all the time.  You do have to pay for shipping so it'll be like $6 for 250 cards.

2.  Discount - If it's not free it's discounted.  Today I found 100 post cards for $17.49.  There is always fun stuff.

3.  Templates - If you don't have your own design no worries.  They offer tons of different designs for anything you order.  You can customize your own, but it may cost more.

4.  Variety - There are different templates for all sorts of business categories.  Tons to choose from.

Things that I've ordered and loved: Business Cards, Vinyl Manner, Car Magnets, Post Cards, and Letterhead.

Maintain Good Online Reputation How To

How to Maintain a Good Online Reputation:

1.  Don't Annoy your fans.  Give them information that's useful and exciting.  If you bore them with sales pitches then they will never buy, they will get annoyed.

2.  Don't be Vulgar.  Yes with language but also with content.  Guess what no one wants to see your alien newborn or the helpless deer you slaughtered.  Sorry but it's gross and just plain weird.  Unless this is your niche then have at it.

3.  Keep it PC.  Everyone has strong opinions and it's important that you stay on the fence.  Keep everything politically correct as to not offend anyone.

4.  Do Not State your Own Opinion.  This is just opening a can of worms.  If you post that pink is your favorite color you will get hate mail from everyone who loves purple.  Seriously, it's ridiculous.

Holiday Promo Ideas

Holiday Promotion Ideas
Everyone wants a deal for the holidays.  People love giving presents and want to get the most for their money.  Having promotions throughout the holidays is a great way to increase brand loyalty and increase sales.  Start off with these simple ideas:

1. BOGO - It's Buy One, GIVE One.  Offer your customers the chance to buy an item and the same item free for a loved one.

2. Gift Giveaway - Similar concept but offer a contest where you give away something, but customers have to enter someone else for a gift.

3. Coupon for Survey - Offer a discount for customers who fill out a survey online or in store.  This is a great way to learn more about your target market.  These are the customers who are most important for your business so take advantage of hearing what they have to say.

Create Lists on Four Square

Why You Should Create Lists on Four Square

1.  Promotion - Use these to promote your business or your interests.

2.  Teach - Educate your readers and fans by letting them know what's great in the area.  Tell them great restaurants or free local parks, etc.

3.  Content & Fun - Customers like to see that they have something in common.  If you have a common interest like Leo's Pizzeria in your local area your customer feels more comfortable with your business.

I Love Tumblr

I absolutely love Tumblr, I like it way more than Facebook and here's why:

1.  Trending Tags - If something is liked and talked about it is easier to find.  There are some great tags that lead you to amazing things. Try Vintage or Poetry.

2.  Easy - It is really easy to use, only 1 page you have to mess with and it's not confusing.

3.  Visually Pleasing - It is a great visual site with lots of great pictures and it's really fun and quick to look at.

I highly recommend Tumblr.  Follow Me on Tumblr: http://www.tumblr.com/blog/buffaloonabudget
